Ewen’s Room gives young people a chance to learn through sport and activity

Glasgow

Ewen’s Room in Lochaber has been awarded a £25,000 Wooden Spoon grant towards specialist sports and activity aids, helping create more opportunities for children and young people to get active, develop new skills and learn in a supportive environment.

The project will provide equipment to support Ewen’s Room’s health and wellbeing activities, helping children and young people across the local community to take part, try something new and develop skills that can benefit both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Based in the West Highlands, Ewen’s Room supports people living across Lochaber and the surrounding Western Highlands and Islands who are experiencing difficulties with their mental health. The charity has a particular focus on young people, working to raise awareness of mental health and challenge the stigma that can prevent people from asking for support.

For Ewen’s Room, learning is about more than what happens in a classroom. Through its youth groups, education programmes and activity sessions, children and young people are given opportunities to learn about themselves, connect with others and develop practical skills to support their wellbeing.

The £25,000 Wooden Spoon grant will help Ewen’s Room continue creating these opportunities, providing sports and activity aids that can be used to encourage participation, learning and positive experiences.

The new sports and activity aids will build on this work, helping Ewen’s Room provide more engaging ways for young people to learn, participate and develop.

Giving children a chance to learn

Wooden Spoon is a charitable organisation dedicated to transforming lives through the power of the rugby community.

Committed to supporting children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage across the UK and Ireland, the charity funds projects that create opportunities for children and young people to play, learn, thrive and be safe.

Through its support of Ewen’s Room, Wooden Spoon is helping create opportunities where children and young people can learn new skills, build confidence and discover activities that support their wellbeing.

In communities where access to activities and support can be more challenging, particularly across rural and remote areas, projects like this can provide an important opportunity for young people to come together, try something new and feel part of their community.

With a strong history of impactful, community-driven initiatives, Wooden Spoon continues to work with organisations across the UK and Ireland to turn the generosity of the rugby community into positive opportunities for children and young people.

Through collaborations like this, Wooden Spoon continues its mission to bring about positive, lasting change and give children and young people a chance to learn.
